A rigorous approach to concentration estimates

Sediview permits the derivation of solids concentrations from ADCP backscatter data.

The difficulties of estimating solids concentrations using acoustic data are well known and the effects of both instrument performance and varying environmental conditions must be addressed in detail. Simple direct inversion methods or interpolation between points of known concentration based on the backscatter intensity (dB) recorded in ADCP data files are unsatisfactory and can give rise to errors in the concentration estimates that can exceed an order of magnitude.

Sediview addresses, in a rigorous manner, all aspects of sound propagation and attenuation through the water and the suspended sediment. The most important aspects are summarised here.
